Practicing in the areas of estate planning, probate and tax, James advises clients regarding wills, revocable living trusts, charitable giving plans, irrevocable trusts (including dynasty trusts), estate, gift, generation skipping, fiduciary income tax matters, problems regarding administration of estates and asset protection. James also provides counsel to a number of owner-operated businesses with regard to succession planning, including life insurance planning.

Representative Matters

  • Advised majority owners of privately held businesses with charitable and income tax planning related to upcoming liquidity events.
  • Advised families regarding creation of private family foundation versus donor advised fund. 
  • Handled probate and trust administration of estates/trusts and interests in closely held and public companies.
  • Created and funded grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs). 
  • Created and funded intentionally defective grantor trusts, including multigenerational (and dynasty) trusts involving generation-skipping transfer tax.
  • Advised multiple clients regarding estate planning related to placement of multiple types of life insurance products, including trust-owned policies. 
  • Advised multiple clients regarding creation of property-holding trusts to provide privacy related to residential real estate holdings, including initial purchase transactions by trusts.

Outside of the office, James enjoys spending time with his wife and their three young children. He also coaches Little League baseball.
